Step 1: What you need to build a pizza oven
There are many different styles of pizza ovens, from small clay ovens to larger-scale concrete ovens. What you decide to build depends on a few factors, including cost, size constraints, time, what kind of food you want to cook etc.
We decided to build this pizza oven on a wooden base so we could move it if needed! Our pizza oven will weigh about half a ton, so we prepared a pallet! Many people find a more permanent spot for the oven and build the base so that the pizza oven is at chest level as you bake.
Materials to prepare:
- Construction sand (general purpose sand usually contains a small amount of aggregate in the mix)
- Fine sand (fine sand is good for detail work)
- A bucket or pot to make a chimney
- Brick (The ideal type is heat resistant but not essential)
- Balloon nylon
- Some pieces of wood/foam to make the arch
- Aboard (if building on pallets) – make sure it’s for outdoor use or it will warp!

The exact amount depends on the size of the pizza oven you want to build. You can make this oven in stages, so you don’t have to buy exactly the amount of materials you need. A lot of people say that heat-resistant bricks should be used when building an oven. When heated to high temperatures, standard building bricks can expand and cause the oven to crack slightly.
Step 2: Build the foundation.
Once you’ve decided on a location for the pizza oven, put the pallet down and make sure it’s horizontal. Pallets must be placed on level ground, using small wood chips to wedge under the pallet to raise if needed.
After the pallet is sorted, use a wood saw to cut the wood around the pallet exactly to match the bottom of the pallet for cementing. Cut some strips of boards about 50mm high to form a belt around the top of the pallet, making sure that there are no large gaps between the boards as this will create an opening for the cement to leak out.
Mix concrete in 1: 2: 4 (1 part cement, 2 parts sharp sand, 4 parts aggregate). Use the shovel to put the concrete in the wooden mould. You can use a rolling ruler to ensure that the concrete is flat and has the best appearance. This top layer will create the floor for the pizza oven and make it as smooth as possible.

It is good to place the bricks in the correct position before permanently fixing them in place. With standard house tiles, I would recommend cutting them in half so you can get more shape for your pizza oven. The arch will form the roof of the area where you put the cake inside the oven. Generally, the hook is about two-thirds the height of the entire furnace. We used styrofoam to fix the bricks, but you can use other materials to make the bricks themselves. This will make it easier to fix the bricks at the top of the arch while the concrete dries. The advantage of having a curved rather than flat arch is that you can use the weight of the bricks laid on top of each other.
Step 5: Begin to complete the construction of the pizza oven.
The first step here is to strip a layer to the first cement, placing the tile using the grout to stick the bricks together. We put a mound of the correct size inside the furnace—nylon strip or cellophane on it to make it easier. A sand mould inside the kiln was created so that the bricks could be fixed on it before grout and concrete were poured (preventing collapse while the cement was wet!). The sand is wrapped in cellophane or plastic sheeting to prevent the concrete from sticking and melting inside the kiln.
Start layering on the bricks at the top of the cellophane. At this stage, we will put the chimney to completion. The chimney must be placed higher than the door to ensure that the smoke goes out of the chimney and not out the front of the furnace. Don’t worry about the cement messing up the outside of the kiln.
